Can you recall an email after 30 seconds?

Gmail’s Undo Send stops at 30 seconds. What that limit means, and what you can still do after it.

RevokeMail team

Not with Gmail’s built-in tools. Gmail’s Undo Send works for a maximum of 30 seconds, and once that window closes, the email has been delivered. Outlook’s recall can work later, but only inside the same Microsoft 365 organization and only if the message hasn’t been opened. Recall24 gives you 24 hours to recall access to the message.

In short

  • Gmail Undo Send: 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds.

  • After 30 seconds, Gmail can’t take a message back.

  • Outlook recall: same organization only, unopened messages only.

  • Recall24: 24 hours, with Gmail and Outlook.

Why Gmail stops at 30 seconds

Undo Send isn’t really a recall. Gmail simply waits before sending. During the cancellation period the email is still with Gmail; when the period ends, it’s delivered. A longer delay would slow down every email you send, which is why the maximum is 30 seconds.

How to set the 30-second window in Gmail

  1. Open Gmail on a computer and click Settings.

  2. Click See all settings.

  3. Next to Send cancellation period, choose 30 seconds.

  4. Scroll down and click Save changes.

On your phone

In the Gmail app, an Undo button appears at the bottom of the screen right after you tap Send. Tap it to reopen the draft. The cancellation period you choose on a computer applies to your account.

A trick for important emails: schedule send

If you want more than 30 seconds to double-check a high-stakes email, use Schedule send in Gmail and pick a time a few minutes from now. Until it goes out, the email waits in your Scheduled folder, where you can open it and cancel sending. It’s manual, so it works best for the emails you already know are sensitive.

What about Outlook?

Outlook’s Recall message can work after the first seconds, but only when you and the recipient both have Microsoft 365 work or school accounts in the same organization and the recipient hasn’t opened the message. It doesn’t work for personal accounts such as Outlook.com, or for recipients at other companies. For those, Outlook offers a short Undo Send delay, similar to Gmail’s.

After 30 seconds: your options

  1. Send a short correction or clarification.

  2. Ask the recipient to disregard or delete the message, if needed.

  3. If you sent the message with Recall24, recall access to it — you have 24 hours.

How Recall24 works differently

Instead of delaying your email, Recall24 lets it go out normally. You keep using Gmail or Outlook, nothing changes for your recipients, and for 24 hours you can recall access to the message if you change your mind. Compare both in Gmail Undo Send vs Recall24.
